Conn's, Inc. Reports Net Sales Results forthe Quarter Ended October 31, 2008

BEAUMONT, Texas, Nov 06, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Conn's, Inc. (NASDAQ/NM:CONN), a specialty retailer of home appliances, consumer electronics, computers, lawn and garden products, furniture and mattresses, today announced its net sales results for the quarter ended October 31, 2008.

Net sales for the quarter ended October 31, 2008, of $173.9 million, increased $3.8 million, or 2.3%, as compared with the quarter ended October 31, 2007. Net sales represent total product sales, service maintenance agreement commissions and service revenues. Same store sales (sales recorded in stores operated for the entirety of both periods) decreased 5.8% for the quarter ended October 31, 2008. Same store sales were slightly positive for both August and October, with the 144 store-days lost due to Hurricanes Gustav and Ike negatively impacting September sales. Sales in the markets affected by Hurricane Ike benefited from higher product replacement sales during the month of October. Total revenues for the quarter, including revenues from finance charges and other, will be reported in the Company's earnings release and conference call scheduled for November 26, 2008. The following table presents the makeup and changes in net sales for the quarter:

The following is a summary of the key items impacting net sales during the quarter:

-- The consumer electronics category showed solid growth as continued consumer interest in LCD televisions and higher home theater sales offset declines in projection and plasma television sales,

-- While the home appliance category declined slightly for the quarter, as the appliance market in general showed continued weakness, with higher laundry sales offset by lower cooking and refrigeration sales, it showed a solid increase overall in October,

-- Track sales increases were largely due to higher laptop computer, DVD player, GPS device and accessory sales, partially offset by lower desktop computer, video game equipment and MP3 player sales,

-- The increase in furniture and mattresses was driven by growth in furniture sales,

-- Other sales increased on sales of generators and related items to customers in the markets affected by Hurricane Ike,

-- The service maintenance agreement commissions increase was consistent with the overall increase in product sales, and

-- 11 stores opened since August 1, 2007, with one store opened during the quarter ended October 31, 2008.

Net sales for the nine months ended October 31, 2008, of $559.6 million, increased $29.2 million, or 5.5%, as compared with the nine months ended October 31, 2007. Net sales represent total product sales, service maintenance agreement commissions and service revenues. Same store sales (sales recorded in stores operated for the entirety of both periods) decreased 2.0% for the nine months ended October 31, 2008. Total revenues for the nine month period, including revenues from finance charges and other, will be reported in the Company's earnings release and conference call scheduled for November 26, 2008.

The Company also sells lawn and garden products, furniture and mattresses, and continues to introduce additional product categories for the home to help respond to its customers' product needs and to increase same store sales.

Unlike many of its competitors, the Company provides flexible in-house credit options for its customers. In the last three years, the Company has financed, on average, approximately 59% of its retail sales. Customer receivables are financed substantially through an asset based loan facility and an asset-backed securitization facility, from which the Company derives interest income and servicing fees. Under the securitization facility, the Company transfers receivables, consisting of retail installment contracts and revolving accounts extended to its customers, to a qualifying special purpose entity (QSPE) in exchange for cash and subordinated securities. The QSPE funds its purchases of the receivables through the issuance of medium-term and variable funding notes issued to third parties and secured by the receivables, and subordinated securities issued to the Company. In August 2008, the Company entered into an asset based loan agreement to provide financing for a portion of its receivables. Receivables financed by this facility and amounts borrowed under the facility will be carried on the Company's balance sheet.
